The Gates

The Gates was a temporary public art installation by artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude that ran from February 12 to 25, 2005 in New York City's Central Park. This video features Gerald, a charismatic monitor talking about the Gates, Christo and Jeanne Claude on the last day of the installation.

The 7,503 gates were 16 feet tall and varied in width from 5 feet 6 inches to 18 feet according to the 25 different widths of walkways, on 23 miles of walkways in Central Park. Free hanging saffron colored fabric panels, suspended from the horizontal top part of the gates, came down to approximately 7 feet above the ground. The monitors assisted the public and gave information. All workers were financially compensated and received breakfast and one hot meal a day.
